Huawei’s Mate 90 has debuted with an updated XMAGE imaging system, adding new portrait options and changes aimed at more accurate color reproduction. Huawei Central reports that the flagship’s camera upgrades include a True-to-Color Portrait engine and a third-generation multispectral camera.

What was launched?

The Mate 90 series introduces new imaging sensors alongside additional camera capabilities. The report highlights portrait rendering and color accuracy as parts of the XMAGE update and identifies camera capabilities supported by higher-end members of the lineup.

XMAGE is Huawei’s in-house mobile photography imaging brand. It launched in July 2022 after Huawei ended its partnership with Leica. Since then, Huawei has developed the brand for its top devices in both China and overseas markets.

Cameras

The True-to-Color Portrait engine offers four shooting modes:

  • Portrait Original: Delivers natural-looking portraits that restore true beauty.
  • Soft Light Portrait: Uses delicate lighting and shadow reflection to create atmosphere.
  • Dazzling Fireworks: Uses a continuous variable aperture to balance brightness and shadow for clear, realistic images.
  • Starburst: Adds sparkling rays of light for a more dynamic appearance.

Beyond those portrait choices, the third-generation True-to-Color multispectral camera 3.0 introduces a full-focal-length infrared optical coating. The report attributes a 37% improvement in overall color accuracy and a 62% improvement in skin-tone accuracy to the upgraded system.

The report also describes an 18EV ultra-HDR main camera for higher-end Mate 90 variants, including Pro Max models and RS Ultimate Design. It captures 18 stops of dynamic range in a single shot, compared with the 10 to 12 stops the article cites for traditional camera solutions. The wider range retains both bright highlights and dark shadows in high-contrast scenes.

The article also mentions an XMAGE Z10 Modular camera featuring a 1-inch sensor and 24–240mm continuous optical zoom.
